Tuesday evening, twenty minutes before kickoff. A coach is stood pitchside with a clipboard, running down a list of names, half of them crossed out from last week's changes. A parent turns up with a kid who isn't on the sheet. Someone asks if a player's inhaler is logged anywhere. Nobody's sure.

The register is doing one job when it should be doing five

Ask most football providers what their register is for and they'll say the same thing: marking kids in and out. That's true, but it's also the smallest part of what a register needs to handle on a normal session day.

A walk-up parent wants their child to join on the spot. Someone's moved up an age group and needs shifting to a different session. A player takes a knock to the shin and someone needs to log it properly, not scribble it on the back of a sheet. A coach needs to know, without leaving the pitch, whether a kid has an allergy on file.

None of that is unusual. It's a normal Tuesday. The problem is when all five of those things live in five different places: a clipboard, a WhatsApp thread, a first aid folder in the office, a spreadsheet nobody's updated since September.

What a register should actually do

You can mark attendees in or out, same as any register. But you can also add someone on the spot, for free or with an invoice attached if it's a paid walk-up. You can move a player between registers in a couple of taps, no re-entering their details from scratch. Question answers a parent gave at booking, allergies, medical notes, emergency contacts, show up directly on the register instead of buried in a separate form. And tapping a player's name pulls up their full booking history, lets you add internal notes, and gives you somewhere proper to log an incident.

It's the same document. It's just not doing one job anymore, it's doing five, and it's doing them without anyone having to leave the pitch to find a filing cabinet.

Why this matters more in football than most sports

Contact and near-contact sport means incident logs aren't optional extras, they're something you'll actually use, regularly, and something you need to be able to produce if a parent asks what happened. Age-group and squad movement happens constantly in football specifically, trials, promotions, kids moving up mid-season, which makes "move between registers in a couple of taps" a genuinely different experience from re-entering a player's details every time they change groups. And walk-up sign-ups at pay-and-play sessions or open trials are common enough that a register which can't take a manual add and invoice it on the spot is actively losing you bookings, not just creating admin.

None of this is about replacing a coach's judgment. It's about not making them dig for information they already collected once.

Where this fits

This is the first in a short series looking at the operational tasks football providers are still doing by hand, one piece at a time, starting with the one that sits at the centre of every session: the register. Payments, comms and reporting are the same story, told from a different angle, and we'll get to those next.

If you've got a question about how it'd work for your setup specifically, the support channel and live chat inside Pebble go straight to a real person, not a queue.
